Fifteen months ago I made one of the best decisions of my life, I joined CrossFit Rockwall! I had just become a single mom about 9 months prior and had really gotten to a low point as far as my physical fitness and my confidence. The last couple of years had really taken a beating on me mentally, and I was desperate to find something - anything - to ignite a fire inside me again.
As a former multi-sport high school athlete and a runner who had dabbled in triathlons, I loved training and competing, but everything had gotten really stale-I was bored! A friend told me that I should give CrossFit a try because it might fill that void of competing and it would be way more exciting than what I was doing at the time. I started doing some research and a few days later I was signed up to take Elements with Mary. After the very first day in Elements I was hooked! THE SPARK WAS LIT!!!
One month after I started, I competed in a local event alongside our team from CrossFit Rockwall and as an individual, I didn’t even finish last! A month or two later the CrossFit Open rolled around and I was so excited to compete I could barely handle it! Even though I was brand new to CrossFit, Mary encouraged me to sign up with the goal of simply getting through every WOD at the prescribed weight. I thought it was pretty lofty, but with one single power clean at 50kg I was able to stay on the leaderboard and eventually finish out the entire open ON the leaderboard. Out of about 300 in our region last year, I finished 15th from the bottom and I couldn’t have been more excited about what I had accomplished! It was simply amazing to me that I was doing things I never in my life imagined I would be physically and mentally strong enough to do. Not only was I getting a lot stronger, my confidence was back with a vengeance and I owed it all to CrossFit!
Shortly after Sectionals was over, I started having some issues with my shoulder. By the end of May I needed surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff. Being involved with CrossFit before my injury and staying consistent with my training afterwards helped my recovery immensely. Before my shoulder was injured, last year my snatch max was 26.5 kg. In March during the Open this year I was able to snatch 34 kg TWENTY SEVEN times! Just to PR by that much with a healthy shoulder was pretty amazing I thought, but reaching that goal after going through all of that with my shoulder was simply unbelievable to me. It never could have happened if it weren’t for Mary and the other coaches pushing me to stay consistent and keep moving. Working out during my rehab was crucial. It wasn’t as much “fun” as I was used to having in class because a lot of things had to be modified while my shoulder was still healing, but they stayed on me to keep coming and keep moving and it has paid off in a major way! I have PR’d on every lift I’ve done since having the surgery!
CrossFit is so much more than a “gym membership.” It’s the best kind of fever, and if you can catch it, you will never be the same. The level of knowledge coming from our coaching staff is beyond incredible. The comradery we have among our athletes here at the box, well, you just can’t put a price on it! These people are a huge part of why CrossFit has been a success in my life. Not only have my coaches enabled me to become stronger and more fit, they have counseled me on the importance of nutrition and eating the right foods to be the healthiest person I can be. I’m not perfect at that part, but at least I am equipped with the knowledge!
You could never make a better investment in your health and you certainly will NEVER have as much fun as you’ll have getting in shape and being involved with CrossFit Rockwall! It’s hands down the best decision I’ve ever made for myself!
