I've been training at CrossFit Rockwall for a bit over a year now and have found a fitness program / process / lifestyle that exceeds the expectations I had for it from the beginning. I had driven by CFR for a year or two before getting fed up enough with where my fitness was to finally signing up for Elements.
The Elements class (the class designed to give each athlete a sound base to start from on each lift or movement) confirmed a couple of things for me. First, I was in worse shape and much weaker than I thought I was. Second, I wasn't alone in wanting a change in my level of fitness. There were people starting CrossFit around the same time I did and they had the same nervousness I did. However, there were people and coaches at the box that were there to encourage me. Their presence has challenged me and caused me to work harder than I would on my own. I love having new folks come in because I get to encourage them, see their progress and be pushed by them.
If you talk with most anyone who's done CrossFit with good coaches, to a person, they've almost all seen real results and almost all started CrossFit group WOD's with some level of scaling. Because others were scaling their workouts, I felt free to do the same. This made each WOD doable and each WOD intense for my current level of fitness. As my fitness has improved, scaling has decreased.
I think that's my favorite thing about CFR; knowing my fitness level is improving and being able to SEE it. Whether it be dropping weight on a scale, decreased scaling, being able to lift heavier weight gradually, increasing the number of reps I'm able to do, or improving my times on benchmark WOD's, I can actually see improvement. This improvement has led to functional results like being able to throw my kids higher and more often in the pool (wall balls), drag an elk in Colorado (dead lifts), move furniture (squats, cleans, presses), chase my kids (running), and play like I haven't in quite some time (hand stand walking, what?). In short, CrossFit has helped me be a better steward of the body God entrusted me with, and better stewardship has led to more ability to do things I really want to do!
Thank you to Mary & Mike, Darren, Daniel, Brandy, Dominique, Ben, Michelle, and all the athletes that push me daily!
