After having my third child, I knew that I wanted to get back into shape, start feeling better about myself and have something to do that was “just for me”. My husband had a membership to a local gym, but I knew that I wouldn’t go often if it was just up to me. I had attended bootcamps around the area before, but getting up at 4:30am and working out in the “elements” (rain, snow, cold, hot, etc.) wasn’t something that I wanted to do again. I was looking for a place that I could get a good workout in, maybe in a group setting, and be able to do it on my own time, not someone else’s (like a personal trainer).
My husband recommended that I try out Crossfit, but at first I thought he was joking. It had been well over a year since I had done any kind of workout. Seeing and hearing about all of these incredible athletes on TV, I thought there would be no way I could hang with them. But finally, with his urging, I looked into the CF here in Rockwall and saw that they offered a free workout. I signed up for it and went, even though I was really nervous. I went into it thinking that I was going to fail, and that I wouldn’t be able to do half the things there. But, after completing a workout that included box jumps, wall balls and a run, I felt more confident in my ability to really workout there - in a group setting, but still at my own pace/weight.
I have been with CFR since September 2013, and in the past 10 months I have noticed that I am stronger and more capable of doing things than I ever thought would be possible. After only a month, I was able to run a 5k without stopping. I went from having to do a push up on a rack, to being able to do modified pushups but touching my chest to the ground each time. I started doing pull-ups (which I never thought would be possible) with a green/red band to being able to go down to a blue band. I have noticed the way my body shape has changed. I might not have lost a lot of weight, but looking back at pictures from then to now, my back has slimmed down and changed significantly for the better! I even participated in the Regionals at the Rock competition, which I never dreamed was a possibility for me!
I like how everyone is so nice, encouraging and helpful. It doesn’t matter which class time you attend, you still feel comfortable. All of the coaches are so helpful and are able to give you one-on-one help, even in a group setting. I love that I am able to work out in a group too - not only for the friendships, but for some friendly competition. I am almost always last, but everyone is there to cheer you on and encourage you to finish. You never feel “less than” or weak. You are always praised to do your best and once you finish, there is such a great feeling of accomplishment.
When I started, my goal was to workout 3 days a week. Now, I average 4-5 days a week because I enjoy it so much. I normally go to the 9am class. Once I go, it just puts me in a better mood for the rest of the day. I would recommend CFR to anyone. It doesn’t matter if you are currently working out, or haven’t worked out consistently in years -you can start where you feel comfortable and only get better from there. I am still amazed at how far I have come in just under a year. I never knew it was possible, but with CFR there’s no limit!
