Mollye and I moved to Rockwall in June 2013. After a few weeks of settling in our new home we began discussing the need to join a gym. We were just about to sign up at the Y when one day I happened upon CFR when running errands. Our only exposure to Crossfit was through a co-worker who competes in team competition at the games. I checked out the CFR website and even asked that same co-worker to read the coach bios and tell me her thoughts. She said, “you’ll be in good hands with these coaches” so I proceeded to sign up for the elements classes.
I was very nervous when I arrived for my first class. Our first activity was the 400m run and that’s when I tried to talk myself out of this crazy decision before it even started. I’m not a runner by any means but I made it through. We worked on some lifting moves with the PVC pipe and I felt like a fish out of water. Everything was so awkward but I kept getting told that it will get better, it just takes some time. Our WOD that day was Mini Cindy and half way through I tried to talk myself out of Crossfit again. When the WOD was over I laid on my back for a few minutes trying to recover from what just happened. I knew that I was out of shape so that was not a shocker. What really got me was how weak I really was. I watched as the regular athletes completed their WOD and I noticed that most of them were on their backs gasping for air too. I also noticed each of them cheering for the other and shouting words of encouragement for the ones that finished last. I could see the friendships and bonds between the athletes and I knew that was what Mollye and I desired most. The experience was humbling and exhilarating.Mollye's view:
We had both done high intensity workouts before but after Jason’s first class I could tell this was completely different and eventually he talked me into taking the elements class. The challenge of Crossfit intrigued me. I finished the elements classes not sure if I would be any good at this but thought I would give it a shot and started the classes. For the most part Jason and I had always worked out together and I wanted to continue so that we would have this to share. As the classes started I became more driven to do better and hopefully not embarrass Jason. With the encouragement of the coaches and other athletes in our class I became more comfortable and soon couldn’t get enough. I had never lifted before and many of the movements in the work outs I had never attempted – so that was a little scary for me. Thankfully the coaches are there to make you better each and every time. I have a little bit of a competitive nature so I knew if I could be consistent, things would start to get easier.
Since July we have noticed a total transformation both physically and mentally. We have new muscles, definition, we feel stronger, and we have more energy. Overall we feel so much better. CrossFit provides continual goals and it is so fun working toward those goals. In addition to that, CFR has a great team of coaches that are patient with you and really work towards driving you towards your desired results. We have been able to be part of the Battle at the Rock, Eat Real, accomplished our first All-Star status and Jason finished his level 1 testing. This is truly something both of us enjoy doing together. We are able to push each other to the next level and encourage one another. It is a huge part of our daily lives.
CFR also provided Jason and I with something I don’t think either one of us fully anticipated and that is the friends we have made since we started. The community that Mike, Mary and the coaches have built is incredible. We have made some wonderful friendships that make us feel like we have truly found our home here in Rockwall.
