I found Crossfit by coincidence - or, if you believe in it, maybe by fate. A few years of a desk job and general laziness led to finding myself out of breath just from climbing the one flight of stairs in our house. Something had to change, and I felt pretty aimless trying to do something on my own in the local fitness center, so I went looking. What I found was CrossFit Rockwall. I did some reading, and Greg Glassman's early articles defining the 10 aspects of fitness and how to train them peaked my interest enough to try it out (and talk my wife into coming with me!)
Needless to say, I "drank the kool-aid" and Crossfit has become a big part of my life. I got my level 1 certificate about 6 months after joining, started coaching a bit later, and haven't looked back since. I found a passion for coaching and helping people better themselves, and Crossfit has provided me with a way to do that.
Crossfit works. Even five years in, I'm still making gains in multiple areas. Back squat? PR. Shoulder press? PR. Snatch? PR. 400m run? PR. Benchmark times? PRs.
PRs aside, I think the best thing I've gained since starting Crossfit is not physical, it's mental. Going up against a tough WOD and coming out the other side builds confidence and mental toughness. Having confidence in myself and my ability to get through something like "Barbara" makes a lot of other things pale by comparison.
So, fate or coincidence-by-Google-search, take your pick. Either way I'm a Crossfitter for life!
