Initially when we started looking into CrossFit, I had hesitations based on my lack of knowledge of how a real Crossfit box functioned. I was fortunate enough to be exposed to the sport very early on at work. We had a full Crossfit gym, but no coaches. I wish I had video of how I did snatches before joining Crossfit Rockwall because I can assure you, it was atrocious!
My wife, Julie, was convinced that she just wasn’t going to be able to do it. She is not as coordinated as others! If you don’t believe me, just throw a ball at her! However, after seeing how the coaches were able to scale each workout, I was able to convince her to try it. She was very hesitant at first, but with my encouragement she agreed to sign up for the elements. When she finished the course, she knew she could do it and agreed to try it for six months.
Our two kids, Hannah and Heath, had no hesitation whatsoever. They had been to "the box" multiple times watching Julie and I, and they were both very excited to start.
The changes we’ve noticed are amazing! For myself, I've noticed an increase in strength and size - and without even changing my diet. Interestingly, I just received my blood work back and the results were almost equivalent to what they were when I was running a marathon. I know if I could only change my diet, I would see even greater results. I’m still working at perfecting my lifts, but I have noticed some big jumps in weight and I credit the programing and coaching for that.
Julie actually gained weight after joining Crossfit, but she has muscle tone now and even her coordination has improved. Although she is not competitive by nature, she has found that working out in a group setting pushes her and makes her not want to be last to finish. She realized she had a competitive side that she didn’t even know existed. Hannah and Heath have also discovered their competitive sides, often competing with one another for bragging rights.
Training at CrossFit Rockwall is a great experience because of several reasons. First, the coaching staff is awesome. I was really hesitant to join because I had a difficult time justifying the expense, especially considering I could do Crossfit for free at work. However, the 1st workout I participated in - Mary was my coach and I immediately realized there was a huge benefit to working out at Crossfit Rockwall. These same coaches helped put Julie at ease when she began and really made her feel comfortable doing something outside her comfort zone. Secondly, the CFR community is a huge part of what makes training there enjoyable. We love interacting and getting to know the other athletes we train alongside of. The community element also pushes us to try harder. At the very least, it’s great for friendly competition. We love the white board and being able to see how others did on the exact same workout. Finally, even though I despise the snatch lift, I do enjoy the Sunday afternoon weight lifting class. Woody and Ben do a great job with this class. It is a great addition to the regular classes at Crossfit Rockwall.
Because we enjoy coming to Crossfit Rockwall, it has increased our consistency in working out, which in turn has improved our strength and fitness. None of us had any specific fitness goals prior to starting, except that Julie wanted to be able to do a pull-up, and now she can! I can also do muscle-ups now, which is something I had attempted to learn for years!
If you are the only member of your family working out at Crossfit Rockwall, I would encourage you to get more of your family members involved. We have really enjoyed becoming part of the Crossfit Rockwall Family!
