Will and I moved to Texas in December 2010 from Arkansas for Will's job. Once we got settled I started looking into gym options. When I was in Arkansas I was going to a local gym about four times a week and doing multiple classes. Will was on a cycling team and that was his main form of exercise. I wasn't having much success in gaining muscle and losing weight with the amount of time I was spending there. I was also bored with the same ole gym classes - hardly any results for the time I spent there. When looking for a gym in Texas I wanted something different. I googled gyms in the area with the option of a personal trainer - in hopes of meeting my goals. The normal local gyms you always see popped up, but one stuck out. It was Crossfit Rockwall.
I had never heard of Crossfit and none of my friends had either so I did what most people do, I went to YouTube to see if I could find out more about it. The first video I ever watched was "What is Crossfit". After I watched it I was both amazed and terrified. I knew I wanted to check into it more, so I went to a free workout! I was intimidated at first but once I got there I saw others just like me, people who wanted to get into shape. There were women and men my age (in their mid-20s) to people in their mid 30’s and older. I went to two free work outs and was absolutely hooked. I signed up for the Elements class after my second free work out.
Crossfit Rockwall is my second family. The coaches truly have your goals in mind and will help you anyway they can to achieve those goals. They are your biggest cheerleaders and encouragers. Crossfit is the only sport I know of that has true sportsmanship among all the competitors and box (gym) goers. Crossfit has changed the way I look at fitness. I started out hardly being able to do a modified push up and using the biggest bands for pull ups. Now I can do a full push up, I can do unassisted pull ups, and can dead lift 222.7 pounds. The constantly varied workouts always keep it exciting and full of new challenges. I will NEVER go back to a normal gym. After seeing my success, my husband tried Crossfit in hopes that cross training would help with his cycling. Here is his story:
"I have found that crossfit has allowed me to become not only a better all-around athlete, but prevent injuries from occurring on the bike. Crossfit has allowed me to become more flexible and build strength in my upper body which I had struggled with. I have always found going to the gym to be rather boring and this was a great alternative to compliment my endurance sport. Every time I complete a WOD it feels like I gain something from it. Whether it be strength, flexibility, agility, cardio, or all of the above - it is very rewarding. Before I started crossfit I often found myself fatiguing on the bike in my core - before my legs and endurance faded out. I realized that this was something that needed to be adjusted and crossfit has made a difference. I do not find myself fatiguing as quickly or fatiguing in my core and arms like I did before."
Crossfit is something we enjoy doing together. We both love what Crossfit is about and what it does for our fitness. It will always be a part of our lives. If you’re thinking about trying it out please do! You won't regret it! I have been there now almost 2 1/2 years and Will just hit his 2-year mark this month. Crossfit has been a great addition to our lives and we are very thankful for the family that we have at Crossfit Rockwall. Joining Crossfit Rockwall was one of the best decisions we ever made!
