Mike and I have been coming to Crossfit Rockwall since February 2011. Our only regret was not finding it sooner. A co-worker of ours is a member of Lake Highlands Crossfit and he was talking it up around the office. He, his wife and their kids are all Crossfitters. Mike works out every day at lunch and sometimes I join him but not as consistently as I need to in order to make a difference. Having worked out at just about every gym you can think of from Larry North to 24 Hour Fitness, on my own and with trainers, it always seemed repetitive and boring. I would move from one gym to another or one trainer to another for a change of pace. But it never really changed.
We both were “fit” compared to many friends, family and co-workers but Crossfit sounded really difficult and challenging. But our co-worker assured that we would enjoy it and that it would be fun. We signed up for the free class and after about 5 minutes into the workout, I thought I may die. My lungs were burning and I was praying I would be able to catch my breath at some point soon! Early on we saw people stand on their hands, do pull ups and climb ropes to the ceiling. Something neither of us thought we would do. I am proud to say we can do all those things. And I am especially proud that I did my first Rx workout just a few weeks ago. Mike has worked his way up and does them frequently.
When we joined the full classes, we expected to get more fit. But we didn’t really know what fit meant. We do now. We have never been this fit or felt stronger. Crossfit challenged us in a new and different way. It raised our level beyond anything we thought we could do and ignited the competitive spirit in both of us. We are trying to beat old man time and we are winning. Our goal is to do better than the last workout and when we are finished, there is a strong sense of accomplishment individually and as part of the group. It is a lot of fun to see everyone push hard and complete a workout no matter the level or time. Crossfit not only helps with fitness, it also changes the way we look at the world. When presented with a challenge, we say of course we can do this, we do Crossfit.
We didn’t expect to find the best advice and guidance on diet we have ever gotten. We joined the Eat Real challenge and learned about the Paleo diet. Dropping processed foods, dairy and sugar have made the biggest difference. The best part is we feel really good every day. We do make a few exceptions. What the heck were cavemen thinking? Where were the beer and other spirits? We are sure that was an oversight in the reporting of history. Cavemen must have had a beer, a glass of wine or a cocktail from time to time.
We went to the Crossfit regional competition last year in San Antonio to watch Mary compete. It was so inspiring to see what she and the other competitors accomplished and so great to be around so many fit people. We went to LA to the Crossfit Games and found even more inspiration. We plan to go again. And, thanks to the amazing environment that Mary and Mike have created, we plan to be Rockwall Crossfitters for life.
