Ron and I have been married for 20 years. We have four girls - ages 20, 16, and twins that are 11. We have always been a very active family. Ron and I have always worked out until our kids’ schedules started dictating our lifestyle. We have two girls who are currently playing competitive soccer and the other one is on a competitive dance team. Life became extremely busy and we stopped working out. Ron had some major back issues that we dealt with for years and he finally had to have major surgery. We started gaining weight and developing some health problems from living a sedentary lifestyle. We knew we needed a change and we needed to find something we could do that we would enjoy. Ron joined Weight Watchers and started running all the time and lost a lot of weight. Then he developed bone spurs in his ankle and had to give up running. Finally, we got to a point where we started investigating different places to workout.
We knew we wanted something different, so I started investigating Crossfit Rockwall. I decided I would go to a free workout and check it out. I didn't exactly know where Crossfit Rockwall was, so I ended up missing that first workout. Ron and I found another free workout and decided to go together. Needless to say it kicked our butts! I'll never forget the workout. I loved how it was timed and competitive and how it pushed me. Mary was trying to talk to us at the end of the workout and I just knew I was going to puke. We were hooked from that point. We signed up for elements and the rest is history. At that first workout we were like, man all these people are young and in good shape, we really don't fit in. We didn't let that stop us. We did the elements class and loved it. For me, I had never done any type of lifting so it was really foreign to me and I was a little scared. We were worried we wouldn't be able to figure out how to get to the workouts with our crazy schedules. Our biggest obstacle was our kids’ schedules and it is still amazing to me how we figured it out.
For me, Crossfit has been life changing and has really changed the way I feel about what I can achieve physically. I am shocked by some of the stuff I've been able to accomplish. I've always felt like I gave up when I got tired or when something started hurting while I was working out, but I have learned how to push through the weakness in my mind and pain in my body and that is a huge achievement for me. I still have a long ways to go, but I am looking forward to the journey. I am an extremely competitive person by nature so the timed workouts and working out with others has really appealed to me. I have tried to get a little control over that crazy competitive nature because the desire to beat someone sometimes would outweigh doing a movement correctly. I feel like I have beaten that demon somewhat!
I have learned sometimes the competition is against myself - to push beyond what I think I can do and expect more of myself. I am so proud of how far Ron and I have come. Our bodies have really changed. We look somewhat like athletes, and that is pretty good for two people who are in their mid-to-late forties. Our friends and family see pictures of us and we get tons of compliments. We got our best friends hooked on Crossfit. They don't go to our box but that is OK!
On the nutritional side, the Paleo plan really appealed to us as well. We have always felt that what you eat and how you work out are both needed to see real changes in your body. We have been on the journey to figure out food for a long time. We've tried many, many, diets over the years. We were vegetarians for a number of years and Ron did Weight Watchers for many, many years.
We love the sense of community that we have gained at Crossfit. We feel like we have made so many friends and they are all such great people. We feel very lucky to have stumbled upon such a goldmine just looking for fitness and yet finding so much more. Crossfit Rockwall, you rock!
